10 Questions with Terol Pursell (A runner from Northwest Missouri State University)

1. At what age did you start running competitively?
My first race was in mid January my Freshman year of high school. My coach brought me to a 5k in mid January to watch a couple team mates run. (Was under the assumption that I was a specator.) I got there and he handed me my bib number and told me to get warming up. 21 & change was my first ever 5k time.

2. Why did you start running?
I had played football for a handful of years prior to hs as well freshman year. After my freshman year of hs football and a pretty successful freshman track season I realized my football coach was a jerk and I needed to make a decision. I felt that my chances to succeed during and after college were better in running than football.

3. How many miles do you typically run in a week?
Over summer and most of the season I will average 65 miles. I usually max out at 75 during summer for a week or two.

4. What is your favorite brand of running shoes?
I've been a big fan of both Asics and Nike. Currently however I'm alternating between a pair of Vomero and Percision.

5. Do you listen to music when you run? If so what do you listen to?
I can't stand listening to music while I run. I enjoy hearing my breathing and my foot strikes. Those are indicators of exertion level and my gait.

6. Where is your favorite place to run?
I love running in the trails. Mountain bike trails are usually the best. Those have been some of my most interesting runs that I've done.

7. What is the farthest distance that you have ran?
The furthest run has been 16 miles.

8. Have you had any injuries related to running?
Sophomore year of college I was laid up with a stress fracture on my lower medial side tibia.

9. What has been your most memorable running experience?
My most memorable race was last year at the MIAA Championships. Coming into the meet I was seeded 5th at 9:32. Coming out of the race I finished in second place with a PR and provisional time of 9:13

10. What advice would you give to beginning runners?
Keep at it; be dedicated to the sport. Make sure you do it because you love it and be sure that you go to a quality shoe store to get the proper type of running shoe.
